Saturday, May 19 Trail Day
Â
The Saturday trail crew and Kona Bikes are hosting our next Trail Day this Saturday, May 19th.   The plan is to get Cheech and Chong’s reopened after the recent logging activity in that zone.   We’re not sure if there will be any re-routing on this day since it’ll be a big effort to just get the previous trail cleared, but we do want to ensure drainage is taken care of….
Where: Â Â Â
Either meet us at the Lake Padden parking lot near the softball fields/dog park at 9:45 AM or ride your bikes up to the top of Cheech and Chong’s around 10. We’ll be working in small groups and leapfrogging each other as we work down the trail.
What you should bring: Â
water, snack, work gloves, weather appropriate gear, your favorite tool, and your bike if you want to get a ride in.
We will provide:
tools, a light breakfast, bevies throughout the day, lunch, and a worthy project for you and your buddies to work on.
Waivers:
If you haven't been to a trail crew day this year, you'll need to sign a waiver. Â We have to update these annually. Â We'll have them available in the morning, or you can download from the WMBC web site and bring it with you. If you are under 18, your parents will need to sign it too.
See ya out there!

North Fork Trail Closure
As you've probably already heard, the DNR is about to shut down the NF to mt. biking beginning next Monday 4/2/2012.
A group met with DNR last Friday and the meeting didn't go well. They were totally unwilling to even discuss an interim solution with the idea of working towards a long-term plan. It’s sad because multiple mountain bike groups have actively been at the table with DNR for many years to determine a solution in regards to this area and others. The biggest overarching issue is there is extremely limited access to areas to recreate on DNR land for many users groups and especially mountain bikes in Whatcom County.
The limited access to legal and approved trails is a large part o the reason why all groups have created their own trail networks. We say all user groups, because user built social trails are not endemic only to mountain bikers. The DNR indicated, as have other land mangers, that most all user groups have constructed unauthorized trails on DNR and other public lands, be it ORV's, equestrians, hunters or mountain bikers.
While the WMBC does not condone the construction of unauthorized trails, we do feel there is a more positive solution to this issue. For an area with such access to the outdoors, that is the elephant in the room. Why not find a way to work with legitimate and proven user groups to help provide for this public recreational opportunity. Time and time again outright closure has been found to be an ineffective and expensive way to try and manage the open space lands.
Please see the attached file for how you can help.
ACCESS CLOSED IN ACTIVE LOGGING AREASANY ACCESS WHETHER VIA TRAIL OR ROAD IS CLOSED IN ALL ACTIVE LOGGING AREAS ON GALBRAITH MOUNTAIN. Janicki had a VERY, VERY close call with a trail user today who did not observe the posted trail/road closures. It is imperative that trail users observe and obey all posted trail closure notices. Access to any of the active logging areas poses an extreme hazard to trail users. Logging crews are not expecting intrusion from the public into these areas and the equipment they operate does not allow for the visibility necessary to operate safely with the general public in the vicinity. Please help keep the mountain open while logging activities are occurring by obeying all posted signs, caution tape closing off roads and trails and spread the word. Thank you, WMBC Board |
